What is ISO 42001 and what is this training?

What is ISO 42001:2023?

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the international standard for an AI management system: a set way in which an organisation manages and accounts for developing, providing and using AI systems. The standard is voluntary and an organisation can be certified against it by an independent certification body. It is not a one-off tick box but an ongoing improvement process. ISO 42001 is achieved at organisation level, not per employee: an organisation is certified, an individual is not. The standard also includes staff requirements: employees must be suitably competent for their role and aware of the AI policy, their contribution and the consequences of not following it (clauses 7.2 and 7.3).

What is an ISO 42001 awareness training?

This training helps you cover exactly that staff part in practice, at awareness level. Your people do not need to know the standard or have a technical background. In six short lessons they learn what an organisation with an AI management system expects of them. By making it demonstrable that your employees know what ISO 42001 asks of them, you make your organisation's certification process easier.

Who it is for

ISO 42001 does not only affect your AI specialists. Everyone who works with AI in their job falls under the staff requirements of the standard. This training is made for that broad group, from operational staff to management, without any prior knowledge needed.

🏢

Organisations in an ISO 42001 process: support the staff part on competence and awareness with a short training and a certificate for each employee.

👥

Employees in any role: from operational to management and in any sector. No technical background needed.

🤝

Suppliers with client requirements: show clients that your employees have tested, basic knowledge of responsible AI use.

What your employees learn

📘

What ISO 42001 is

what an AI management system is and why an organisation adopts the standard. An ongoing improvement process, not a one-off action.

🧭

The AI policy and your own role

where to find the policy, its main rules and what you contribute yourself: following the policy, passing on signals and helping to improve it.

⚠️

Recognising risks

spotting bias and discrimination in AI output, knowing that AI makes things up (even in a confident tone) and judging the security and reputational risks.

🛡️

Using AI safely at work

which data should not go into an AI tool and how to mask it, why shadow AI affects the organisation and which route to follow for a new AI need.

⚖️

Responsible AI and human oversight

the practical core principles from the training (fairness, transparency and accountability), recognising when a decision needs human review and that final responsibility stays with you.

🚨

Reporting and improving on incidents

recognising an AI incident or concern and reporting it through the right internal route, plus the life cycle of an AI system from procurement to decommissioning.

Why ISO 42001 calls for awareness among your employees

ISO 42001 does not only ask for policies and procedures. It also asks for employees who know what responsible AI use means. Policy on paper is not enough. In an audit, it must be visible that your people know the AI policy, recognise risks and know when to report something. This training makes that awareness practical and testable. With reporting by department and employee, you also make it demonstrable.

As an administrator, you see by department and by employee who completed the training and passed the exam. You export this as a CSV or as a PDF evidence report, usable as supporting material in your ISO audit file.

What your certificate is and is not

After the exam, every employee who passes receives a certificate with the learning outcomes on it. Be clear about what that means:

  • It is an AIAdopt record of participation and tested awareness. Not an ISO certificate, not a legally required certificate and not a form of government recognition.
  • AIAdopt is not a certification body. Your organisation obtains its ISO 42001 certificate through an independent certification body, not through this training.
  • The training supports the awareness part of an ISO 42001 process. It does not provide the certification itself.
  • This certificate is not an ISO 42001 certificate. It can, however, serve as supporting evidence for the staff part of your ISO 42001 process.
